PATCO Ticket Collection Enhancement & Modernization

Project Description
The Ticket Collection Enhancement & Modernization Project upgrades PATCO’s ticketing system and enables customers to use additional contactless payment options such as mobile phones, smartwatches, and contactless credit cards directly at PATCO fare gates.
The $16.9 million multi-year project will modernize PATCO’s current Automated Fare Collection System (AFC) including fare gate readers, ticket vending machines (TVMs), and FREEDOM Card Service Center point of sale (POS) systems. The upgrade will also enable TVMs to vend paper money as change, instead of the current dollar coins, and replace the magnetic stripe ticket with a limited-use contactless smart ticket.
The current fare collection system was launched in 2007 as a card-based, closed-loop system. Many of the components in the station devices are original and nearing the end of their useful life.
