DRPA Inspires Future Professionals at School Lane Charter Career Fair

On March 28, the Delaware River Port Authority (DRPA) proudly participated in the School Lane Charter School Career Fair for the third consecutive year.Associate Engineer Jason Moore and Manager of Planning & Design Mike Rakowski represented DRPA, engaging students in dynamic conversations about careers in engineering. They offered an overview of DRPA and PATCO, highlighted key infrastructure projects, and explained how we ensure the safety and integrity of our region’s bridges.

Students were actively engaged, asking thoughtful questions such as: How old are the bridges? What would it cost to build one today? How do we keep bridges from collapsing? And how much do engineers get paid? These questions sparked meaningful discussions and demonstrated the students’ curiosity and enthusiasm for engineering.

In addition, students had the opportunity to learn about careers in public safety with Officer Elgharbawy, Officer Waters, and Project Manager Matt Pezzato. They shared insights into the history of DRPA’s law enforcement team, the wide range of careers in public safety, and the impact that social media behavior can have on future opportunities. The highlight for many students was hearing real-life stories from the field and learning about DRPA’s K-9 unit.

Following the event, we received several heartfelt thank-you notes from students. Here are just a few of their reflections:

“Thank you cops from Delaware River! It was really interesting and intriguing learning about your police force. I love how you taught me there was a lot more branches in the police force because I always thought the police was just a combined group and nothing else but now I know, there's a lot of branches in the police force.”

“Thank you, for your time and cooperation to present what you do and what you enjoy doing for your job. I have learned many things but the favorite thing that I learned was that the k-9 dogs that you have are from Germany. I find it honestly cool that they are from there. This has impacted me by knowing where they are from since I have seen many k-9 dogs before but I didn't really know where they were from.”

“Thank you for coming to our school, because this is making me think back to when I really wanted to be Public safety/police.”

“Thank you for showing me how it is to build bridges. I learned that they put sand in some of the things that hold the bridges but when they fall down, it has to be rebuilt.  This impacted me by having me learn about all of this, I never knew all this information before but now I do.”

“Thank you for protecting our town! I learned about how many calls you have gotten which is so many calls for help. It is amazing that you decide to choose an occupation to help other people. I didn't know that you would have to call 911 for suicide since they have other operations that help those who didn't want to live.”

We’re honored to support the next generation of leaders and professionals. Our thanks to School Lane Charter for hosting another impactful career fair, and to the students for their curiosity, energy, and inspiring questions.
