Future Engineers and Transportation Leaders: DRPA and WTS Philadelphia Inspire Philly Students

More than 20 high school students from across Philadelphia got a firsthand look at careers in transportation and engineering during a special behind-the-scenes tour of the Ben Franklin Bridge, hosted by the Delaware River Port Authority (DRPA) in partnership with Women in Transportation Services (WTS) Philadelphia. The event took place on April 25.

The visit kicked off with a historical overview of the iconic bridge, presented by DRPA Engineers Mike Howard and Lis Klawunn. They shared insights into its original architecture, early development, and the ongoing maintenance required to keep it safe and functional nearly a century after its opening.

Chief of Police Edward Cobbs and Bridge Director Joseph McAroy welcomed the group and spoke about the importance of inspiring the next generation to pursue careers in public service and infrastructure.

Students then walked the pedestrian walkway, where DRPA staff offered an up-close look at the bridge’s engineering features—including its suspension system and current capital improvement projects. Along the way, students learned how the bridge serves as a vital link between Philadelphia and Camden. Many were especially struck by the panoramic views from the bridge deck.

The tour continued at DRPA’s Fleet Department, where students learned about the team’s day-to-day operations and its essential role in supporting bridge maintenance.

This hands-on experience gave students a tangible glimpse into real-world career paths while allowing them to connect directly with professionals who keep the region moving. DRPA is proud to support WTS Philadelphia’s mission to build the transportation industry’s future workforce- one student at a time.
