Stopping Theft in Its Tracks: Free Steering Wheel Locks for Hyundai and Kia Owners

DRPA Police partner with Hyundai and Kia to prevent car thefts

The Delaware River Port Authority (DRPA) Police Department is taking proactive steps to combat a nationwide trend of Hyundai and Kia vehicle thefts. To help prevent thefts in our community, DRPA Police are offering free steering wheel locks to eligible Hyundai and Kia vehicle owners to prevent theft while the cars are parked at PATCO stations.

This initiative is in response to a national issue linked to a social media trend demonstrating how to access certain Hyundai and Kia vehicles without a key. The target of these thefts is Hyundai and Kia vehicles lacking push-button ignitions and immobilizing anti-theft devices. Generally, the models affected are Hyundai vehicles from 2015-2022 and Kia vehicles from 2011-2022. While the issue is not isolated to PATCO, DRPA Police are committed to helping protect the property of PATCO riders.

“Our goal is to keep PATCO riders’ cars safe and ensure our train stations remain secure,” said Sergeant Joseph Ebling, who oversees the program. “We want to deter this national issue away from our stations and our backyard, and offering these locks is one way we can help prevent this activity.”

PATCO has an initial supply of approximately 200 steering wheel locks for distribution, with the ability to obtain more if demand is high. The locks will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis during outreach events at PATCO stations. Stay updated by following us on social media for details on upcoming outreach events.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • To receive a steering wheel lock, you must:
    • Own a Hyundai or Kia vehicle equipped with a turn-key ignition (not a push-to-start system).
    • Provide your vehicle registration.
    • Show a valid driver’s license.

Tips to Prevent Vehicle Theft:

  • All Vehicle Owners:
    • Lock your doors and keep your windows closed. Always secure your vehicle, even when parked for a short time.
    • Park in well-lit and high-traffic areas. Select spots near the station entrances with frequent foot traffic to reduce the likelihood of theft.
    • Use a visible deterrent. A steering wheel lock can discourage potential thieves from targeting your vehicle.
    • Report suspicious activity. If you see someone walking through PATCO lots and looking into vehicles, report it immediately using our “Look Up. Speak Up.” app or by contacting DRPA Police.
  • Hyundai & Kia Vehicle Owners:
    • Install the vehicle manufacturer’s free anti-theft software upgrade. Visit the official Kia and Hyundai websites for details and availability.

“By staying vigilant and working together, we can make a difference in protecting our community and preventing vehicle theft," added Ebling. “Everyone’s awareness and cooperation are vital in keeping our parking lots and vehicles safe.”
