Ben Franklin Bridge South Pedestrian Walkway to Reopen May 25

South Walkway open daily while North Walkway closes for bridge construction

The South Pedestrian Walkway on the Ben Franklin Bridge will reopen on Saturday, May 25 after being closed for bridge construction.

The south walkway was closed in March 2023 to allow work on the bridge’s south suspension cables. With the switch of the south walkway reopening, the north walkway will be closed for the removal of the bridge’s north main cable platform.

The switch results from construction progressing on the Ben Franklin Bridge Suspension Span & Anchorage Rehabilitation Project. The $216.9M multi-year project is the largest in DRPA’s history and extends the life of the nearly 100-year-old suspension span.

The operating hours for the south walkway will remain the same:

  • October 1 – April 30: Open daily, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., weather permitting
  • May 1 – September 30: Open daily, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., weather permitting

The south walkway underwent an 18-month improved accessibility project and was opened to the public in 2019.
