DRPA Announces Ben Franklin Bridge Pedestrian Walkway Switch

North Walkway open daily while South Walkway is closed for bridge construction

The Ben Franklin Bridge North Pedestrian Walkway is open daily, while construction work on the bridge’s south suspension cables requires the closure of the South Walkway.

The switch occured on the morning of March 6 and willl continue through 2024, with operating hours remaining the same:

  • October 1 – April 30: Open daily, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., weather permitting
  • May 1 – September 30: Open daily, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., weather permitting

Walkway users are reminded that the Camden entrance of the North Walkway has a flight of stairs. The stairwell features a plate on one side to assist bicyclists in rolling a bike up or down while walking the stairs. In addition, users familiar with the north walkway will notice the narrow section on the Camden side has been widened.

The upcoming switch results from construction progressing on the Ben Franklin Bridge Suspension Span & Anchorage Rehabilitation Project. The $216.9M multi-year project is the largest in DRPA’s history and extends the life of the nearly 100-year-old suspension span.
