WALT WHITMAN BRIDGE TO CLOSE FOR 20 MINUTE INTERVALS BETWEEN 11 P.M. AND 5 A.M. ON AUGUST 18 AND 19

Periodic closures required for removal of an overhead sign gantry.

The Walt Whitman Bridge will close to traffic for several 20-minute intervals between the hours of 11 p.m. on Tuesday, August 18 and 5 a.m. on Wednesday, August 19. The periodic bridge closures are necessary to allow construction crews to remove an overhead sign gantry on the span.

Starting at 9 p.m. on Tuesday, August 18, travel lanes will be reduced to one lane westbound and 3 lanes eastbound to allow construction crews to set up.

The first 20-minute bridge closure is scheduled for between 11 p.m. August 18 and 12 a.m. on August 19 when a crane will be positioned over the gantry. Once everything is secured, the bridge will be re-opened to allow traffic to clear. Shortly after, the bridge will be closed for a second 20-minute interval to allow the gantry to be removed. Once the gantry is removed from the roadway, the bridge will be re-opened to traffic.

A third 20-minute closure may be required to complete the gantry removal. Work is scheduled to be completed by 5:00 a.m. with four lanes open in the westbound direction and a minimum of two lanes open in the eastbound direction.

Recommended alternate routes:

  • Ben Franklin Bridge
  • Commodore Barry Bridge

Motorists are strongly advised to use the Ben Franklin Bridge or Commodore Barry Bridge during the closures. Variable message signs across the region will advise motorists about the closures and delays. In case of inclement weather, the work will be performed the following day.
