DRPA Announces Reopening of 5th Street Tunnel
Improved tunnel features a wider, protected bike lane and increased lighting
CAMDEN, N.J. – The Delaware River Port Authority (DRPA) today announced the reopening of the 5th Street Tunnel between Callowhill and Race Streets in Philadelphia after being closed for 11 months to allow for rehabilitation work to preserve and extend the life of the 1,200-foot roadway tunnel.
The $3.3 million project included repairs to deteriorated concrete walls and installation of new curbing, guardrails, protective coatings and increased lighting.
Improvements were also made to the tunnel’s bike lane, which was widened and buffered with flexible delineator posts to clearly separate motor vehicle and bicycle traffic within the tunnel’s roadway.
