Drivers Reminded Of “Steer Clear” Laws

Drivers are reminded that both Pennsylvania and New Jersey have “steer clear” laws requiring motorists to move over or slow down when they encounter an emergency scene,  traffic stop or disabled vehicle.

The law is designed to protect police, emergency responders and tow-truck operators as they carry out traffic stops and respond to crashes and disabled vehicles.

The law requires drivers to move to a lane that is not adjacent to the scene of an emergency response, police stop or tow truck picking up an abandoned vehicle.  If drivers cannot move over because of traffic or other conditions, they must reduce their speed.
