Commodore Barry Bridge: Upcoming Lane Restrictions for Containment Installation
Weekday lane restrictions and traffic impacts begin June 1 as part of $220 million rehabilitation project
Motorists should expect lane restrictions and possible delays on the Commodore Barry Bridge weekdays beginning Monday, June 1, as crews begin installing protective containment systems as part of the ongoing $220 million bridge rehabilitation and painting project. The work is expected to last approximately two weeks.
The work involves installing sealed containment tarps above the roadway to protect the traveling public and surrounding environment during abrasive blasting and repainting of the bridge’s steel truss members. The containment system is designed to safely capture and contain removed lead-based paint for proper disposal and is maintained under negative pressure as an added environmental safeguard.
Traffic Pattern:
- Westbound traffic will be reduced to one lane on weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
- Eastbound traffic will be reduced to one lane on weekdays from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
- Motorists should expect delays before and after the listed times as crews safely establish and remove lane closures. Traffic will be temporarily slowed during these transitions, and residual congestion may continue beyond the scheduled work periods.
- Additional lane restrictions may occur during overnight or off-peak periods as construction activities require.
The Commodore Barry Bridge carries five lanes of traffic, while other DRPA bridges carry six or seven lanes. As a result, any lane closure has a more noticeable impact on traffic flow.
Motorists should expect congestion, merging traffic patterns, and travel delays, particularly during peak periods.
What to Expect
- Speeds reduced to 25 mph through the work zone
- Expect delays, especially during peak periods
- Merging traffic patterns
- Motorists should use caution and follow posted signage
- All work is weather dependent and subject to change
Project Information
The bridge is currently undergoing an extensive rehabilitation and painting project, the largest in DRPA history. The work includes structural repairs, steel preservation, and repainting designed to extend the life of the bridge and improve long-term reliability. Travel Advisory
Drivers are encouraged to use alternate crossings, including the Walt Whitman Bridge, allow extra travel time, or plan travel outside the scheduled lane reduction periods when possible.
Updates will be shared via the DRPA website, social media channels, and travel text alerts.
The DRPA appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation as this important work advances. Once complete, the project will enhance the safety, reliability, and longevity of a bridge that serves more than 41,000 vehicles daily.
