Commodore Barry Bridge: Weekend and Overnight Travel Impacts in May

Lane restrictions and overnight traffic holds scheduled as part of $220 million rehabilitation project

Motorists should expect delays on the Commodore Barry Bridge during multiple weekends in May due to ongoing construction.

The work is part of a $220 million painting and rehabilitation project. Crews will be installing work platforms on the bridge’s upper truss to support upcoming painting operations.

The Commodore Barry Bridge carries five lanes of traffic, while other DRPA bridges carry six or seven lanes. As a result, any lane closure has a more noticeable impact on traffic flow.

Expect congestion, merging traffic patterns, and delays, especially during peak travel times.

Weekend Lane Restrictions:
7:00 p.m. Friday through 5:00 a.m. Monday

  • May 1 – May 4 : 2 lanes to NJ; 1 lane to PA
  • May 8 – May 11: 2 lanes NJ; 1 lane to PA
  • May 15 – May 18: 1 lane to NJ; 2 lanes to PA
  • May 22 – May 25: 2 lanes to NJ; 2 lanes to PA

Weekday Overnight Traffic Holds:
Weeks of May 4 and May 11

  • Monday through Friday nights
  • Between 11:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m.
  • Up to three 15-minute traffic holds per night

Overnight work is scheduled to reduce impacts to daytime traffic and allow crews to safely position equipment over travel lanes.

What to Expect:

  • Speeds reduced to 35 mph through the work zone
  • Expect delays, especially during peak periods
  • Motorists should use caution and follow posted signage in the work zone.
  • Merging traffic patterns
  • All work is subject to change and is weather dependent

Project Information
The bridge is currently undergoing an extensive rehabilitation and painting project, the largest in DRPA history. As a result, lane restrictions will be part of ongoing operations over the next several years.

For questions or additional information, contact the Commodore Barry Bridge Painting Project Hotline at 1-844-873-2663.

Travel Advisory
Drivers are encouraged to use alternate crossings, including the Walt Whitman Bridge, allow extra travel time, or travel during off-peak hours when possible.

Updates will be shared via the DRPA website, social media channels, and travel alert system.

The DRPA appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation as this work advances. Once complete, the project will enhance the safety, reliability, and longevity of the bridge, which serves more than 41,000 vehicles daily.
