PATCO's $8.7M Viaduct Investment Recognized as Leading Capital Project
Recognition Highlights PATCO’s Commitment to Strengthening Critical Infrastructure and Long-Term System Reliability
PATCO is honored that the Westmont/Collingswood Viaduct Substructure Preservation Project was recently recognized by the NJ Alliance for Action.
The project was highlighted at the organization’s 15th Annual New Jersey’s Leading Capital Construction Projects Awards Program on March 24, 2026.
PATCO is investing $8.7 million to rehabilitate and protect the viaducts at Collingswood and Westmont Stations. Viaducts are elevated structures that keep trains moving safely and reliably over the roadways below.
Built in the late 1960s, this phase strengthens key structural elements, improves concrete conditions, upgrades power systems, and enhances safety for maintenance crews. It’s a behind-the-scenes investment that keeps the system strong for the long run.
The project scope includes:
- Repainting and Repair: The project will blast clean and repaint the viaduct’s concrete beams and install new bird netting to prevent nesting, protect the structures from damage, and maintain cleaner conditions for the community.
- Concrete Improvements: Crews will repair deteriorated areas and apply a protective coating to the concrete. These improvements will strengthen the viaducts, shield them from weather and wear, and help extend their useful life.
- Electric: New power cabling and system improvements will boost reliability and keep trains running smoothly.
- Safety & Maintenance: Crews will replace expansion joints and add a new handrail along the track area at Collingswood to give maintenance workers safer access while servicing the track area.
The New Jersey Alliance for Action’s "New Jersey’s Leading Capital Construction Projects" awards program was created to highlight innovative, pioneering and landmark construction initiatives that greatly impact the state’s economy and to honor the businesses and organizations that work together as partners to ensure the project’s success.
