Unlocking Potential: The Benefits of the DRPA/PATCO Apprentice Program
At the Delaware River Port Authority (DRPA) and Port Authority Transit Corporation (PATCO), great careers start with great opportunities.
The Authority’s Apprentice Program provides individuals the chance to learn, grow, and make an impact from the start.
In 2023, the DRPA and PATCO pursued and achieved Registered Apprentice Status from the United States Department of Labor. The designation allowed us to develop a structured apprenticeship program that combines classroom instruction with supervised on-the-job training. Each apprentice is required to complete a minimum of 2,000 hours of hands-on learning, ensuring they gain the technical skills necessary for success.
The first apprentice in this program was Jazmine Thomas. Jazmine began her career with PATCO as a custodian. She applied, tested and interviewed for the program and was ultimately admitted. Through her dedication and training, she successfully transitioned into a role as an Electronic Technician. .jpg)
Through hands-on experience, expert mentorship, and real-world projects, apprentices gain the skills and confidence to succeed in their chosen fields. Many graduates go on to join our team full-time, continuing to innovate and lead the way.
"I am truly honored to be part of the apprenticeship program here at PATCO and feel at-home in my new role as an apprentice electronic tech. As a resident of Camden County, the opportunity to work for a rail line that I have frequented for years offers a gratifying perspective on what it means to serve my community. In the program, I am receiving a quality education not just through a local university, but also through my daily interactions with career technicians eager to share their experience,” said Connor Smith, a recent participant of the program.
By establishing this apprenticeship program, DRPA and PATCO have created a model that can be replicated for other hard-to-fill positions. This initiative strengthens our internal talent pipeline, supports succession planning, and ensures that we are proactively addressing workforce challenges while investing in the long-term success of our employees and organization.
“The apprenticeship program is a great opportunity to learn from some of the best personnel here at PATCO. I am also grateful to be able to expand my horizons, my future and my education in the field of electricity,” said Stephen Parker, also a recent participant in the program.
We’re proud to invest in people because when our apprentices thrive, our whole company grows stronger.
